Plastic bottles are one of the most used packagings by companies in all activities. From cosmetics to agrochemicals, plastic bottles are the flagship packaging not only to store and transport products more efficiently, but also to adapt to the formats and quantities most demanded by consumers in a more practical way.

But when we talk about plastic bottles, we are not only talking about the typical 1L bottles that are so consumed in our daily lives, but also the different formats that each sector demands.  The needs of each industry vary. Some industries may look for large plastic packaging to keep large volumes of liquid products, others may look for practical and attractive designs for daily use.

But trends in plastic bottles are changing, but there is one thing that most companies have in common in their demand for plastic bottles, it is certainly the need to seek sustainable solutions.

Trends in plastic containers

Regardless of which industry uses them, one of the main trends in plastic bottles is the pursuit of greater efficiency. In recent years, significant investments have been made in R&D&I and machinery to get smaller and lighter plastic packaging at a lower cost.

But in addition to reducing costs in the manufacture and transport of plastic containers, it is also sought to reduce the amount of resources used for their manufacture and reuse of discarded materials, thus favoring a circular economy with fewer negative effects on the environment. It is in this context that a new type of eco-efficient plastic packaging, designed to meet these objectives, has been conceived.

The need to look for more sustainable formats of plastic bottles has resulted in greater research and development of new manufacturing processes to produce recyclable packaging. Some processes such as co-extrusion have been modified, and new technologies have emerged, such as plasma fluorination, to make recyclable plastic bottles that, having to be more resistant to aggressive products, combined a series of materials that, until now, hindered their recyclability.

With these new technologies, it is possible to get more efficient, recyclable, and therefore environmentally friendly plastic containers. Processes also try to reduce costs and have fewer negative effects on nature.

This is also an important part of each company's brand image. And it is that not only plastic bottles with formats adapted to the functionalities they need or attractive designs are no longer sought, but also that the materials used in both plastic packaging and manufacturing processes are eco-efficient and environmentally friendly.

Plastic bottle formats that our customers prefer according to their sector

Plastic bottles have a very clear function, and it is to preserve and contain the product inside in perfect conditions, maintaining all its properties. These plastic containers  must be designed according to their effectiveness and behaviour in front of the product. Their durability should be optimized and their subsequent reuse or recycling encouraged.

But in addition to these requirements, more and more companies are seeking greater sustainability in their packaging, and this not only refers to 100% recyclable plastic bottles, but also to compostable and biodegradable packaging, among others, that do not harm the environment.

In relation to formats, trends vary depending on the sector. The industrial sectors demand plastic bottle with higher capacities: 1,5 l, 10 and 20 liters. These plastic containers are used for chemicals intended for industry and even for the agrochemical sector.

For industrial activities, companies prioritize profitability when storing and transporting products, therefore large capacities of plastic packaging are the main trend when it comes to plastic bottles. However, in other activities whose products are addressed to retail, priority is focused on issues such as usability, image, design,  branding, etc.

This is where the packaging demanded starts to become smaller. In the dermoesthetic and cosmetic sector, for example, plastic bottles usually range capacities from 200 ml to 1L, even smaller.

This is because products intended for a final consumer tend to have smaller plastic packaging, which facilitates its usability, that is more practical and, ultimately, more adapted to the daily use of people of all ages. These smaller capacity containers are especially in demand lately for products such as pocket hydroalcoholic gels or hotel amenities, for instance. Even though there are some manufacturers that are shifting to higher volume plastic containers to back up sustainability and to make profit of lower transport costs.

However, these latter sectors are showing a new trend, increasing packaging capacities to decrease the amount of material used and CO2 emissions generated by product transport. These new formats allow adapting the plastic bottles to the convenience of users, getting a greater amount of product for each purchase they make.

At Alcion Packaging Solutions we have the latest technologies and manufacturing processes. We always keep up to date on the latest trends to manufacture the plastic bottles that best meet all the targets of each of the sectors and customers. In recent years, growing concern for the environment and for a more sustainable world has not left the plastic packaging for detergent indifferent.

It is not just about using safe plastic containers. Keeping products in perfect condition, maintaining all their properties and even being visually appealing to consumers are not the only factors that concern companies in relation to plastic detergent packaging. Both, manufacturers and end consumers, are increasingly aware and inclined towards a new type of packaging:  sustainable packaging.

What is sustainable detergent packaging?

There is a change in trend in plastic detergent packaging. Where certain characteristics were previously prioritized to make packaging more practical and attractive to consumers, the emphasis is now placed on sustainability, in producing sustainable packaging.

The concept of sustainable packaging is a concept that we listen to daily. Sustainability envelops our culture today and is present in everything we consume.

But talking about sustainable packaging does not just mean recyclable. For plastic detergent packaging to be sustainable, they must meet two conditions: to reduce their environmental impact and to meet their customers’ needs. This means that, in addition to being more environmentally friendly, they must be safe plastic containers, that keep the product safe and that are comfortable and practical for use and consumption.

To achieve sustainable packaging, different measures are being taken such as reducing the raw material used in the packaging, which implicitly reduces the cost and waste produced in addition to influencing its transport, which reduces the carbon footprint.

The materials used in their composition must be unified so that it is easier to separate them for recycling. And to save energy during transport and storage, sustainable packaging must have the right dimensions adapted to the product, so that no extra matter is used. The less space they take up, the less space will be needed for storage and the fewer times it will have to be transported, saving the energy that both would entail.

In short, for plastic detergent packaging to be sustainable, it must be made of recyclable or biodegradable materials, guarantee a reduction of raw material consumption and greater energy efficiency.

HDPE is one of the most widely used materials for plastic containers for detergents that is also recyclable, and therefore environmentally friendly. It is also a safe plastic and keeps the product adequately.

Many of our customers have already begun to prioritize sustainability in plastic detergent packaging. They prefer HDPE monomaterial, for their plastic containers for liquid detergent, in which we include a considerable percentage of our recycled material. At ALCION PACKAGING SOLUTIONS we share the concern of our customers whose objective is to make all their plastic containers for detergents 100% recyclable.

Why many manufacturers plan to change their plastic detergent containers to sustainable plastic packaging?

Climate change and concern for the environment is a problem that has left no sector indifferent and has touched plastic detergent containers.

Large manufacturers of cleaning products have spent the last few years trying to design new plastic packaging formats for detergents capable of fulfilling all the functions they had already contemplated and adding one more feature: sustainability.

Detergent packaging has traditionally been designed to capture consumers' attention on supermarket shelves, but purchasing trends are changing, and as online commerce increases, the more important sustainable packaging becomes.

Although e-commerce seems unrelated to plastic detergent packaging, its influence on detergents is such that it has ensured that all major brands of cleaning products rethink the way they package detergents.

The explanation is that, in a globalized world where products travel thousands of miles to reach the end consumer, packaging optimization has become a priority to reduce the energy and the expenses on their transport and storage.

But, although saving unnecessary costs is a matter of primary interest, plastic detergent packaging is also a way to convey a brand image, and the image that more and more consumers want to perceive is that of a sustainable brand and concerned about the environment.

That is why large manufacturers of detergency have started to use sustainable packaging, greatly reducing CO2 emissions, the raw materials and the energy used in the production and distribution of their plastic containers for detergents.

And now that many companies have found a way to combine the concepts of safe plastics with sustainable packaging, it is important to educate the consumer to understand that, under a different, more environmentally friendly, less heavy packaging, the same product is found and, above all, the same amount.

And even if it is something that will take time, a large part of the population is already fully aware and committed to such changes, supporting plastic containers for detergents that have been manufactured sustainably even willing to pay a little more.

At Alcion Packaging Solutions, we are committed to the environment, which is why we manufacture plastic containers for detergents using the latest technologies, to achieve totally efficient and sustainable processes and materials that adapt to each product in a practical, safe, and responsible way. Any product requires the use of safe packaging capable of withstanding transport, handling and storage. HDPE packaging is a good example as any packaging must protect the products it contains from all physical and atmospheric conditions, such as changes in temperature or altitude, that may adversely affect them.

Some chemical products, such as agrochemical and phytosanitary formulations, also have a composition that can attack the plastic packaging, making it even more difficult to choose the right material for a plastic container. In these cases, some of the most recommended options for keeping the product in perfect condition and withstanding chemical reactions is to pack in an HDPE container along with a  degassing cap.

What is  HDPE packaging?

The material used in HDPE packaging is high density polyethylene, a thermoplastic that is characterized by being hard, resistant, withstanding high temperatures and being durable.

It is not a coincidence that HDPE packaging is one of the most widely used around the world. Plastic containers made of HDPE have an acceptable cost, good resistance to aggressive products and, unlike other types of plastics, can be easily recycled.

HDPE containers can be produced by different technologies such as blowing, extrusion and injection, and although this material has countless applications and uses, most commonly as packaging, we find it, more than often, as HDPE plastic bottles and jerrycans.

In addition to their attractive cost-efficiency and the fact that they are easily recyclable, HDPE packaging is widely used for their flexibility when being processed, as they are resistant and stable during the production process.

At Alcion Packaging Solutions, we manufacture HDPE packaging by blown extrusion, transforming both virgin and recycled HDPE, to produce durable and fully recyclable packaging.

Besides, to ensure optimal protection of your product, using HDPE plastic bottles and jerrycans together with degassing caps might be the option you were looking for.

See all the advantages of HDPE plastic packaging

Degassing cap to complement an HDPE container

Although HDPE packaging is high-performance packaging suitable to pack some aggressive chemical products, pressure changes can cause collapse, alterations, or deformations, including leakage of the product they contain.

All these changes can be caused by several agents:

These agents create problems for the packer or formulator, for carriers, and even for consumers or end users. Some products can pose a health risk if the packaging leaks and causes spill of packaged chemicals, and indirectly, can also pose great costs to manufacturers, not to mention the company's poor image.

At ALCION PACKAGING SOLUTIONS we recommend the use of degassing caps together with our HDPE plastic bottles in certain situations. Our degassing caps, either with sheet or valve, provide a way to evacuate those gases that might deform the container and let oxygen. These degassing caps are the solution for those HDPE packaging of products that are continuously exposed to changes in altitude or temperature and are the safest way to protect the product.

Degassing caps are designed to ease ventilation, although gases can come out, there will be no leakage from the HDPE bottle or jerrycan.

In the case of agrochemicals,   the use of such caps is highly recommended. They concentrate on aggressive formulae that produce gases and risk deforming their packaging, leaking, or deteriorating labeling. In addition, the use of degassing caps in HDPE plastic bottles might also prevent customers from rejecting your product due to deformed, stained or poorly looking containers.

At Alcion Packaging Solutions, we not only manufacture UN approved, resistant and durable HDPE  packaging, we also offer you a packaging solution according to the characteristics of your products. That is  why we also produce degassing caps to ensure the packaging of those more demanding products which require high protection. Let us know what you need, and we will make the container you are looking for.

High Density Polyethylene , commonly known as HDPE, is a widespread material used to produce packaging and many products with a great variety of characteristics. It has become one of the most widely used materials worldwide, and its demand is expected to be highly increased in the coming years.

What is High Density Polyethylene or HDPE?

High density polyethylene is an petroleum-based thermoplastic polymer obtained by adding different units of ethylene. Its molecules have little branches, having great strength and hardness due to its molecular density. This id, in fact, the main difference between HDPE and LDPE.

HDPE is a material which is very resistant to impacts and temperatures either high or low temperatures. Besides, it is resistant to acids and solvent.

One of its main features is that it is a very opaque and colourless material and it is very easy to customize This is why is one of the most used materials in the packaging industry.

In addition, the fact that can be 100% recyclable is the great advantage of high density polyethylene (HDPE). This is the reason why many brands choose it to manufacture their packaging today, as it contributes to a circular economy.

Its applications in such wide and varied sectors, makes it estimate a high continuous growth of its demand. HDPE can be used for the manufacture of bottles, bottles, plugs, cans, communications cables, bags, furniture, pipes, etc.   When it is combined with other materials it is also used in the food, medical, automotive and even in  buildings and  many other sectors nowadays.

Trends in today's plastics market

Since the beginning of the plastics processing industry, its use has spread exponentially to become today a material that we could hardly live without. In the last 10 years, the applications of plastic have been so many and in so many different sectors, which is considered one of the most widespread thermoplastics in our society.

However, a lot of movements have emerged against it, demonising plastics as a whole and pointing at it as the source of one of the main problems of the 21st century society, the climate change.

In fact, plastic is not the source of these problems, at least not the only one. We have to look at the behaviour of consumers and also the poor waste management systems. The plastics industry has been in a constant race for years to find new formulas and technologies capable of becoming less and less harmful to the environment.

If we look at this trend,  taking into account the characteristics of the most demanded and used plastic worldwide, HDPE, and its recyclability,it is difficult to identify the real cause of the problem.

Many companies and governments have decided to start restricting the use of plastic, specially the single-use ones, and replacing it with other materials, but the idea of living in a world without plastic is still unrealistic. We just have to have a look around to see the amount of products and thigs that we use every day and that somehow incorporate some kind of plastic.

One of the problems might be single-use plastics that end up polluting land and seas but, are we ready to improve our waste management systems as well? Are we all ready to stop our “use and throw culture”? Are we ready to stop buying things, using them and throwing them away?

In this sense, high density polyethylene is a material that could still fit in this new scenery. However, a need for greater public awareness of the use of this plastic material and waste management systems is essential.

As mentioned above, one of the advantages of high density polyethylene is the fact that it is recyclable. This means that it is a material that can easily be used in a second life with mechanical or thermal recycling, thus preventing it from polluting the environment and contributing back to the economy.

The plastics industry is also already using new formulas to avoid the use of  those plastics that are not recyclable or to make them become recyclable, other work to find the way to make this material biodegradable.

Consumption of plastic packaging in Spain

Spain ranks fourth among the countries of Europe that consume the most plastics. Although the final use sectors of plastic are very different, the main ones are packaging, automotive and construction.

Up to 42% of the total amount of plastic consumed in Spain is used in the packaging activities. The automotive sector uses about 22% and construction, 15% of the total amount of plastic, to make doors, windows, frames, pipes, piping systems...

In these sectors, we also expect growth in the use of plastic due to the wide variety of opportunities it offers, although it should be noted that legislative requirements are and will be increasingly stringent in everything that affects the environment and health.

It is also important to mention that, in recent years, we get a glimpse of some changes in the behaviour of Spanish consumers of products made of plastic. In our country, recycling of plastic packaging has increased, for example, by up to 8% more than last year, Spain being one of the European countries that recycles the most plastic household packaging.

What differences we find between HDPE, PET and PVC

In order to meet the demands of a diverse and demanding market, the plastics processing industry offers several types of plastic. The most frequently used are  HDPE, PET and PVC among the 7 types identified with the recycling icon:

PET is a strong, lightweight and transparent material, and is mainly used in the food industry due to its barrier properties against water vapour, gases, alcohols and oils, among others. In fact, PET is often associated with beverage packaging. It is a resistant material, although somewhat flexible, and one of its great advantages, like HDPE, is its recyclability.

Polyvinyl chloride or PVC is one of the most versatile plastics and its production only depends on oil at just under 50% of its weight. It is a material used in long-lasting products, and only 12% is used for single-use products. PVC is  lightweight, versatile and is obtained by polymerizing vinyl chloride. In addition,  its good value – price makes it one of the most used materials in the water pipes industry.

PVC is the third most widely used plastic, however, HDPE is the first one worldwide. Although PVC is heavier and stronger, HDPE shows a better behavior under extreme temperatures, either high or low.

In short, HDPE or  high density polyethylene is one of the most used and demanded materials in recent years and it can hardly be replaced. Depending on the applications we will be able to find more convenient the use of other types, as mentioned above.

It is obvious that the development of recyclability of plastics is experiencing a clear growth and together with adequate awareness of society, can bring great benefits to all sectors of the economy.

cta barrier packaging

Nowadays, the consumer can choose from thousands of products and price and quality are no longer the only points that can influence this decision.

When an end user is ready to choose a product made by a specific brand, some details  such as the physical appearance of the product itself and, particularly, the good image he perceives, are decisive.

Custom plastic packaging aims to communicate and transmit a brand image and in addition to providing a sense of security to the customer. When choosing a product, the packaging gives the feeling of safety, that the product inside is in perfect conditions, it is attractive, and shows all the information that may be needed… it is something that gives consumers more confidence.

How to customize an industrial plastic container?

When someone thinks about the customisation of a plastic container he thinks of the image of a special design, of a specific label or sleeve, of defined colors which are characteristics of a certain brand... and all these details will be considered in many sectors such as cosmetics or even food, but when talking about industrial packaging, to go further is a must.

Customising an industrial packaging is more than a simple colour touch. An industrial packaging requires specific customisation elements that may last over time and be indelible because the product they contain, in most cases, might be highly toxic.

At ALCION PACKAGING SOLUTIONS we work side by side with  our customers to properly customise their plastic industrial packaging.

Many customers just choose corporate colors that are introduced in the manufacture of each family of products (bottle-closure).  In our plant we can manufacture packaging and closures elements in any color that our client demands.

It is import to highlight that screen printing has always been the best resource for packaging decoration. Screen printing allows to print on the bottle itself texts and images in many colors, and bring the opportunity to provide all the necessary information to the consumer in an indelible way. In our screen printing section we can offer high quality screen printing process to avoid subsequent labeling of the packaging.

The latest trend is to incorporate engravings on the containers, their closures, and even on the induction sheets, in an attempt to make the packaging containers easily identifiable by the end user. This involves working with the customer on the design of their logo, their trademark or identifying elements that must be added at the time of specific manufacture of each product, regardless of the technology we are going to use: co-extrusion, extrusion or injection

Benefits of custom packaging

Custom plastic packaging is a dynamic way to promote a brand. It is important to include details such as the name, logo or slogan, with which the final consumer can easily identify a product.

In addition, custom plastic packaging reduces the possibility that a brand's packaging will end up being used for purposes and products other than the originals.

By customising plastic packaging, it is much easier to stand out among other competing  brands and show a consistent brand image through the product, especially in those sectors that make products addressed to B2C market through a consumer channel: cosmetics products, food products... Using a brand's shapes, colors, typography, and logos on custom plastic packaging is the best way to make it easier for users to quickly identify the product and stand out from others.

In addition, the outer appearance of the packaging, its usefulness and its safety is what will transmit first impressions about a brand to a user. It is important to care about the appearance of the packaging to transmit safety.

Custom plastic packaging, in addition, protects the product from copies or alterations better than standard packaging.

How to stand out

Custom plastic packaging is essential to stand out from competitors. When choosing a specific packaging design, it is important to comply with some features that attract the users’ attention, even to adapt shapes or many other details that might be trending in the market.

The packaging should be attractive and attract the customer's attention. It must be perfectly adapted to the characteristics of the product, keep all its properties and remain intact. It must show a clean, hygiene and above all, don’t leak and be stagnant. A container that can be easily opened during transport and arrive opened, dirty or deteriorated to the end user, would not give a coorect image.

The shape of the container also influences the safety of the container itself, the ease of handling or transporting and even the sensations it produces to users.

Size also has great power when it comes to transmitting a good image, which influences manageability and usability. Its brimful capacity must be proportional to the amount of the product it contains.

A container about to overflow gives the feeling of not adapted to the product, but if there is too much free space could give the feeling that part of the product has been lost or consumed, or it might even seem that the brand is trying to sell something misleading.

In the case of custom plastic packaging, the quality of the material is also important, as it is one of the details that is most associated with a brand. Using an unsused material, transmitting a sense of weakness, etc., could be highly harmful to the brand.

As for the visual impact, the colors and typography used in texts and engravings must be according to the corporate image, so that it is easy to identify the product with the brand that has produced it.

All of this is of particular importance in marketing strategies. Custom plastic packaging and everything they transmit is a way to stand out and make consumers finally choose one product or the other.

60% of purchase decisions are taken directly at the shelf. Packaging that is true to the brand, that offers a good image can be decisive for a marketing strategy.

In addition, 56% of users decide to purchase new products that they had not tried before after entering the store. This means that using custom plastic packaging as an “on-site advertising” can be even more important and effective than any other advertising action, such as ads and expensive campaigns.

Custom plastic packaging can be said to play an important role not only in the marketing of products, but also in the publicity and advertising strategies of all brands. At  Alcion Packaging Solutions, we know that designing and producing customised packaging adapted to the needs of each product, that projects the image of your brand as faithfully as possible, is the key to  reaching customers in a more direct and effective way.

We have 75 years of experience in the plastic packaging sector, using different techniques to customise each container according to the indications of each of our customers and using the best quality materials.
